05 Lug Pelagie Islands: beaches and fun made in Sicily
Do you know which is the most southern archipelago in Italy? Yes, it is the one that incorporates the Pelagie Islands.
We are in the heart of the Mediterranean, a few kilometers from the African coast, in the free municipal consortium of Agrigento. The islands involve two municipalities, namely the municipality of Lampedusa and the municipality of Linosa.
The Pelagie Islands archipelago includes five islands: in addition to Lampedusa and Linosa there are Lampione, Isola dei Conigli and the Sacramento Rock.
It is a rare example of a transcontinental archipelago, as are the Canary Islands and the Azores or Indonesia. As is well known, the largest island is Lampedusa, which with its 5,000 inhabitants is also the most inhabited. The smallest of the Pelagian Islands is Lampione. In all, there are about 6500 inhabitants in the archipelago.
These islands are not only beautiful, but they also have a peculiarity: they are, together with Ionian Calabria, the only spot in Italy where Caretta caretta turtles breed.
Pelagie Islands: beaches
The most beautiful beaches on the Pelagie Islands are mostly located in Lampedusa and Linosa.
Among the beaches of Lampedusa we point out Baia di Mare Morto, which is located near Cape Grecale and can be reached by a bus line towards Faro. It is a beautiful rocky cove, with depths to be discovered. It is reached by crossing a path of about 200 meters that is within everyone’s reach and requires no special performance.
Cala Galera is also very beautiful. This cove is also easily accessible. It is located within a nature reserve and this makes it still wild and beautiful. Very interesting is the rich Mediterranean vegetation, including scrub and carob trees. The cove is sandy and has several shaded areas.
Conigli Beach is famous for the presence of Caretta caretta turtles, but also for its beauty. To reach it you have to go toward Capo Ponente and walk a path of about 200 meters that, however, is quite challenging. For the handicapped, entry is facilitated as it is possible to arrive via dinghy, upon request.
The beach is controlled, precisely because of the presence of turtles, and access during the summer months is regulated.
Moving toward the beaches of Linosa we find the Spiaggia di Pozzolana di Ponente. The island does not give many usable spots, but this is one of the easiest to access. It is located to the right of Pozzolana Pier and is a very wide sandy beach, characterized by black gravel of lava origin.
These are just some of the most beautiful beaches in the Pelagian Islands. As for entertainment? The islands are sparsely inhabited, but above all Lampedusa also offers entertainment to those who come to vacation in the area. Certainly beauty and nature take center stage here, which are so enthralling that they overpower everything. Of course also excellent cuisine, as in all of Sicily, and many experiences to be had just as if you were a local. An experience to be had at least once in a lifetime.
