Sperlonga: sea, village and what to see

Up and down the Italian coast, we stop on the Lazio coast to discover Sperlonga. Everything here is a discovery, from the crystal-clear, clean sea to the beaches, from the historic centre to all the attractions to be admired.

The landscape you see when you arrive in Sperlonga is picture-postcard. This small white town by the sea brings to mind distant landscapes and villages. Getting lost among the narrow streets and the ups and downs of the centre, among the white houses and the views of the sea, allows you to get to know this small village that has so much to tell.

Where is Sperlonga

We are in the province of Latina, about 150 km far from Rome. Right here, on an offshoot of Mount San Magno, lies the village of Sperlonga. Surrounded by crags and cliffs and washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Sperlonga has been defined by The Guardian as one of the 40 most beautiful beaches in Europe.

What’s the sea like in Sperlonga?

But let’s get down to business and find out what the sea is like in Sperlonga. As mentioned, we are on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Italy and beyond. The sea in Sperlonga is clear and clean and often feels like being in a natural swimming pool. Because of these characteristics and the presence of many free and equipped beaches, this is a perfect destination for everyone and also for families with small children.

Which are the most beautiful beaches in Sperlonga? Here are our favourites.

Let’s start with a beach located south of the town’s historic centre. The Spiaggia dell’Angolo (Angolo Beach) is not to be missed, also because it is located close to the Grotta di Tiberio (Tiberius’ Cave), another magical place worth visiting.

The Spiaggia di Bazzano and the Spiaggia delle Bambole are also very beautiful and characteristic, as is the Spiaggia della Sorgente, known for its icy water that gushes directly onto the sand. A true spectacle of nature.

This is not the end of the story, as you only need to cross into the territory of Gaeta to find the more famous Spiaggia dei 300 Gradini (Beach of 300 Steps), which is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Lazio.

What to see in Sperlonga

But Sperlonga has much more to offer than the sea. This small village overlooking the sea offers, with its whitewashed houses, an incomparable spectacle.

A stroll through the historic centre of Sperlonga is a must if you arrive in the area, as is crossing the small bridge leading to Torre Truglia. This was one of Lazio’s watchtowers and is now one of Sperlonga’s most recognisable monuments. Its peculiarity is that it stands on a stone cliff.

Another tower worth visiting is that of Capovento, which stands just 3 km from the town and, like the other, was part of the system of sighting and protection of the Latium coast.

Finally, we recommend the Villa di Tiberio. It should be remembered that Sperlonga was a holiday resort in Roman times, and here there are wonderful villas that take us back to the splendour of that era.
