The Abruzzo coast: characteristics
Those who want to spend their holidays by the sea in Abruzzo will be pleased to know that the Abruzzo coastline is heterogeneous. Over 170 km of coastline are enclosed between the Tronto and Trigno rivers.
Ideally, we can divide it into two zones. The first goes from the border with the Marche region to Ortona. In this first zone is the sandy Abruzzo coastline. The southern part of Abruzzo, on the other hand, is characterised by high and rocky stretches. The latter is also known as the Costa dei Trabocchi and is undoubtedly the most interesting tourist area.
Here, around 20 trabocchi can be found along a 40-km-long route. Some of them have been abandoned while others have recently been converted into typical restaurants that are very popular with Italian and foreign tourists for the suggestive experience they provide.
The most beautiful beaches in Abruzzo: our favourites
There are many beautiful beaches in Abruzzo, both in one area and another. Choosing just a few is always complex, but we wanted to create a list of the most interesting ones in the region.
Abruzzo’s sandy beaches
Let us start with the sandy area of the Abruzzo coastline. Here you will find many of the most beautiful beaches in Abruzzo.
The Cologna Beach is perfect for those who love wild nature. It lies a few kilometres from the Borsacchio Nature Reserve and is known for its typical natural vegetation. Holm oaks and Aleppo pines are at home here.
The Roseto degli Abruzzi beach is also among the most beautiful in the region, but this one is also much better known than the previous one. Here there are some of Abruzzo’s most beautiful and comfortable bathing establishments, but also free areas. Roseto is the perfect destination for those who go on holiday with their families and children. This area, in fact, has been awarded the Green Flag several times and this attests to the fact that paediatricians recommend it even for the youngest children.
Remaining in the province of Teramo, we find other of the most beautiful beaches in Abruzzo. We recommend the Pineto Beach, known for its expanse of golden sand and crystal-clear sea that frames a splendid pine forest that opens up behind the beach. Here there are bathing establishments but also stretches of free beach. Anyone can find their place in the sun. This is also a favourite destination for those who enjoy snorkelling and water sports.
The Torre Cerrano beach is also very beautiful, named after the construction of the same name that guards this piece of coastline. This is a protected marine area, which is why it is frequented by those who love nature and relaxation. A true spectacle of nature where it is possible to observe, always from a distance and with due precautions, various species of birds that choose these dunes for nesting.
In the province of Chieti, on the other hand, we find the beach of Punta Ferruccio, which lies right next to another nature reserve, that of the Ripari di Giobbe. Here there is a beautiful stretch of golden beach and a wonderful sea. Here and there a few rocks pop up, making it all the more impressive. Lovers of quiet beaches with shallow waters that are also perfect for children, this is the place for you.
Abruzzo’s most beautiful rocky beaches and coves
Not only sand, but also hidden coves and more impervious beaches. We continue with our list of the most beautiful beaches in Abruzzo.
Little sand and many rocks for the small Caletta di Torricella, also in the province of Chieti. Beloved by divers, this beach is perfect for those who like to be sheltered from the wind precisely because of its conformation and the high rocks that delimit the area. A true spectacle of nature.
The Spiaggia di Cavalluccio (Cavalluccio Beach), located on the Fossacesia Marina coastline, is a pebbly cove famous for the presence of Trabocco Punta Cavalluccio and Trabocco Punta Rocciosa. The waters are clean and the shallow waters make it family friendly.
Continuing along the Costa dei Trabocchi, it is also possible to find Cala Turchino, also famous for the presence of a trabocco that juts out from a turquoise sea. An enchantment that goes well with the blue sky of the warmer months. Remember that this is one of the most famous trabocchi, since it was mentioned by D’Annunzio.
This part of the Abruzzo coastline is wilder and more unspoilt, but not prohibitively so. As we have seen, almost all the most beautiful beaches in Abruzzo are easy to reach, even by families with small children, thanks to the shallow waters and fabulous sea.
Not only that. The area is also perfect for all-round sports enthusiasts. In addition to snorkelling and water sports, here it is also possible to take long bike rides or trekking routes to discover the most beautiful areas of Abruzzo.
It is also worth mentioning that some of the most beautiful villages in Italy are located here, such as Guardiagrele and Crecchio or San Vito Chietino and Rocca San Giovanni for those who wish to stay in the maritime area.
Abruzzo is a region waiting to be discovered and offers so much to those who visit it.
