Our tips for discovering the most beautiful beaches in Sicily
Although every corner of the Sicilian coast is a concentration of beauty, we wanted to choose some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. Here is an overview.
Let’s start with the area that is probably the best known on the island. We are talking about the Trapani coast, which contains jewels such as the Zingaro Oasis Reserve. The reserve was established in 1981 and is located in the area of the Gulf of Castellammare, in the western part of the Sicilian coast. This is a true naturalistic and uncontaminated treasure since the area is not reached by a provincial road.
The 7 km of coastline in the Zingaro Oasis Reserve are formed by Quaternary calcarenites and limestone reliefs dating back to the Mesozoic era. The cliffs that thin out towards the sea and the coves, such as Cala Ficarello, offer the eyes a breathtaking visual experience.
The oasis is criss-crossed by a path that allows you to discover some of its most beautiful spots. In almost two hours of walking, you can discover some real treasures and some very suggestive coves such as Cala della Disa and Cala Berretta, the small Marinella cove and Cala dell’Uzzo. The latter is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily and is home to the archaeological cave of the same name.
Staying on the Trapani coast, it is impossible not to mention the beach of San Vito Lo Capo. Very fine sand and a crystal-clear sea: this is undoubtedly one of the most famous beaches on the island.
Also worth mentioning is the Praia di Favignana beach, another paradise with golden sand and an amazing sea that deserves a place of honour among the most beautiful beaches in Sicily.
Moving on to the province of Agrigento, we find the famous Scala dei Turchi. A true spectacle of nature, between the intense blue of the sea and the clean white of the sandstone rock. We are a stone’s throw from the Valley of the Temples, one of the coolest areas in Sicily and the perfect set for many films.
If you want to get to know Palermo’s coastline, Mondello beach is undoubtedly one of the most famous in the region. This is the beach of Palermo’s inhabitants par excellence and here beauty reigns supreme. There are many lidos and equipped beaches but in high summer the area is very crowded.
The island of Panarea and some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily
The Aeolian archipelago is another treasure trove of beauty. The island of Panarea is undoubtedly one of Sicily’s most beautiful gems. Here we find Cala Junco, known not only for its beauty but also because it is easily accessible. Here the bay forms a natural swimming pool set among the rocks. A true paradise in which to relax, also because there is no telephone reception. Digital detox is guaranteed.
We also recommend Punta Milazzese, a stone’s throw from a prehistoric village. In Sicily, archaeology and the sea often come together, making for a unique holiday.
Discovering Lampedusa
The island of Lampedusa is another spot worth getting to know. If you are looking for the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, you must visit the beaches and coves of Lampedusa. Here the land is limestone and you can find both sandy beaches such as Spiaggia dei Conigli and small coves such as Baia di Mare Morto or Cala Pisana.
Very well known is the beach of Guitgia, which rises just in the bay of the port, a few steps from the centre of Lampedusa. This beach is very popular especially with families thanks to the presence of fine sand embraced by high rocks that protect it.
If you are looking for a pebbly beach, we can recommend Cala Greca, also known as Cala Stretta. This is a small beach with crystal-clear turquoise waters located in the south of the island of Lampedusa.
The Lampedusa Nature Reserve with Cala Galera and Capo Ponente is another place to discover.
