Metaponto is perfect for those looking for well-equipped beaches on the Ionian coast of Basilicata, but there are also several accommodation facilities and campsites here. In addition, this is an important archaeological site, since here are some important remains of Magna Graecia which, we should remember, also included the current Basilicata.

Nova Siri is also known both for its scenic beauty and for its references to Magna Graecia. Here the sea and the mountains meet to create a unique landscape. Policoro is also very beautiful and is probably the best known seaside resort. Those who love sandy beaches and shallow waters will find everything they are looking for here. Moreover, the WWF Policoro Heraclea Oasis, a protected area of great importance, is located here.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Policoro is the Beach of Bosco Pantano. Here, among sand and small pebbles and a crystal-clear, blue sea, you can find wonderful spots.

The Ionian coast of Basilicata also offers another pearl: Marina di Pisticci. It is only 30 km from Matera, in an area kissed by a beautiful blue sea with a seabed suitable for children.

Discovering the Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata

Tyrrhenian Basilicata is often identified with Maratea, and it is in this area that you can find some of the most beautiful beaches in Basilicata. A stone’s throw from Maratea is Cala Jannita, also known as the Black Beach.

Moving towards the Gulf of Policastro we find the Calette di Maratea (coves), among which Calaficarra stands out. This beach of light-coloured gravel and dark pebbles opens up between rocks and spurs: a real delight for the eyes of those in search of wild, unspoilt nature.

We should also mention Fiumicello beach, which is sandy and has little to do with the others in the area. This is a popular beach for families and children. Macarro beach, on the other hand, is not so well known but no less worthy. Quite the contrary. If you want to spend a day at the sea, far from the chaos, this beach is the perfect destination. The beach of Cala di Mezzanotte in Acquafredda is also very beautiful. This stretch of coastline is characterised by a coastal gorge right next to the Campania region. The different gorges in this area are very different from each other and some can only be reached by sea.

As you can see, both the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts of Basilicata have some real gems that they jealously guard. Unlike neighbouring Apulia and Campania, Basilicata is still a little-known place and not very much travelled by tourists. Yet here too there is so much beauty that you will be left breathless.
